Happy new year! In this month's issue of the newsletter I wanted to talk about web analytics, web hosting, and live video, as these are a few of the areas where I have been learning new things and tackling new projects this month.
Web analytics. For a quick comparison between Urchin (now known as Google Analytics) and AWstats, check out my recent blog post. Real quickly though, Analytics gives much better graphs and is easier to set up and configure, however its a bit less accurate on the page views because it requires javascript on the browser's end to even know that the user exists.
Web hosting. This month I moved to LT Tech, a web hosting company that I highly recommend. There up-time has been decent, for the price that I pay for my personal hosting plan, and the customer service by email is extremely fast and intelligent. I've been very pleasantly surprised having moved to them.
Live video. Last, but not least, is a website called webtrain, which I am going to use for an upcoming project, for live video training. They offer a solution which can be integrated into one's own website and provide pretty nice quality live streaming video between two webcams, for teleconferencing and things of that nature. One thing to note though is that the extent of their "branded" solution is not as great as they might make you think. For a few extra bucks you can add a logo to the video chat session, but as far as colors/fonts, you can't change any of it.
Sincerely,
Kalen Jordan
